Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
