Manchester United Poised to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Carrington

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:

  1. The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
