NY Unveils Portal for Residents to Report Immigration Footage Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state AG has launched a new reporting form asking locals to share visual evidence of immigration raids across the state. This action follows a shortly after a significant immigration operation rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread outcry.
US Citizens Detained During Enforcement Action
A congressional representative revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Protests occurred in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," the attorney general stated in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement during the raid, I encourage you to share that footage with the authorities. We are dedicated to assessing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."
Form Details
The platform includes fields to upload visual evidence of the operation, along with a field to indicate geographic details. Prior to sending, users must tick a option that confirms that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or government document."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which onlookers say involved dozens of government officers, took place in a famous neighborhood of NYC where fake products and additional items are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to visitors.
Videos of the operation reveal several masked and armed officers zip-tying and detaining a man, and shoving away onlookers. Throngs of locals pursued the personnel along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen traveling down the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
In a news conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be arrested for unjustly." He said the citizens were freed on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he remarked. "This is a armed campaign to create conflict. It is purely a pretext to provoke conflict for this administration to deploy the troops to prevent unrest that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Outrage over the immigration operation quickly spread – all three mayoral candidates criticized the operation, including the state leader.
"Once again, the federal government opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It must stop," a contender declared.
New York City community groups spoke out as well.
"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with tactical trucks, masked agents and riot gear to go after small merchants working to survive. This operation had no connection to citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," stated the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules prohibits the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it will not apprehend citizens. Yet, investigative journalism has found that more than 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents since the start of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been rising in frequency in NY and around the country lately.
A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies opposing ICE are widespread along with claims of force and inhumane treatment.
Most recently, a submission provided by advocacy organizations claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in detention centers.
