Iran is ready to reinitiate atomic discussions with Washington on condition that it is handled with "respect" and "honor", Tehran's foreign minister has stated.

The Iranian diplomat stated only diplomacy worked, and disclosed recent overtures had originated from mediators to reopen talks with the Trump administration. He said Iran had zero unreported enrichment locations, and Iran had not yet reached a point to allow the global atomic watchdog to visit struck enrichment centers for protective measures.

Navigating a Complex Course

Araghchi is navigating a challenging path since Iran wishes not to appear to be acting from a position of vulnerability, and he insisted repeatedly that Iran had emerged stronger defensively and mentally from the coordinated strike on its nuclear sites in June.

He was addressing at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he reaffirmed that Iran had "an absolute privilege to process nuclear material within its borders that it will never give up" – the main reason of the impasse in the prior discussions.

Earlier Talks Unexpectedly Concluded

The prior phases of talks between the US and Iran were brought to an abrupt and acrimonious termination on 12 June when the Israeli government, with American backing, attacked Iranian nuclear sites in a fortnight-long engagement that concluded with the US president claiming the facilities had been destroyed. Afterward, Western states exercised their authority to reinstate international penalties, but Iran asserts they have not had a substantial consequence.

Ideal Resolution Offered

Iran's diplomats said they felt they had reached a "magic solution" to the enrichment issue in prior discussions, when it was decided an domestic cooperative with US participation could process nuclear material. Each party would have been able to declare success since domestic enrichment would have remained and the US could be confident that Iran's nuclear programme was solely for peaceful purposes.

It had not been agreed in the discussions that American atomic experts could work on Iranian soil, but that was a natural consequence of the cooperative offer. Officials stated on multiple occasions they had secured an understanding with Trump's special envoy the US official only for the arrangement to disintegrate due to "detractors in America".

Present Situation

Tehran representatives said the cooperative arrangement was now no longer available, but it seems very probable the proposal could be reintroduced in certain ways if talks reopen.

Trump last week said he had been obtaining communications that Iran sought to restart talks, but confidentially Iranian officials state they are not yet receiving coherent offers from America either explicitly or from significant local go-betweens, such as Qatar, the Egyptian leadership, the Omani authorities and Saudi Arabia. The foreign minister said: "Tehran was not the one that had deserted diplomacy; it was America and the European states that had repeatedly tried to enforce their will during the talks.
