The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
