One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who established the business with his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal collection showcasing issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner

The recent development deepens the continuing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders have asserted how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments

Several years ago, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.

The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Future Plans

Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries that the company's autonomy was undermined after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.

At that time, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told media outlets.
