New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that sparked debate during his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm he would live there immediately following his triumph in November.

"My choice was based on our family's safety and the importance of directing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani connected his central policy – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his humble Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The property, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
