The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
