The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing personal histories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
