What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
